Welcome to the world of digital radio
So far as listeners in the UK are concerned digital radio means Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) which has been broadcasting in parallel with AM/FM services for many years. DAB has its own spectrum in Band III using the old 405 line TV frequencies and on L-Band where a few test broadcasts have taken place.
Other countries have other technologies such as IBOC in the Americas that can be used on AM and FM frequencies and DRM/DRM+ that has been developed to do the same job in Europe. Japan and China may develop their own systems as well.
